Keri-Anne Payne has become the first Great Britain athlete to qualify for the 2012 Olympics after winning the 10km open water race at the FINA World Championships.
"To be on that Olympic team at a home Olympics is going to be absolutely amazing. I'm really pleased."
Keri-Anne Payne Quotes of the week
The 23-year-old made her customary fast start to go straight to the front in Shanghai before being caught by Australian Melissa Gorman late on the third lap of the 2.5km circuit.
However, she powered away on the final lap to hold off a late challenge from 2010 world champion Martina Grimaldi to win in two hours one minute 58.1 seconds.
It was Great Britain's first medal of the competition and means the Stockport swimmer becomes the first athlete to make the team for London.
Payne, who regained the world title she last won in Italy in 2009, can now turn her attentions to the pool programme where she has qualified for the 1,500m freestyle and 4x200m relay.
Amazing
Payne said: "I really wish I could swear right now but I am not that kind of person. It feels amazing, I'm just so happy with myself for doing that.
"To be on that Olympic team at a home Olympics is going to be absolutely amazing. I'm really pleased.
"It's a weight off my shoulders. I can concentrate on training now for next year and I don't have to worry about qualifying because I've already done it."
Payne was realistic about how much attention her world title would bring in the next 12 months.
"I'm sure there will be added pressure on me going into the Olympics but I'll just work on that coming into it," she said.
"I'm definitely going to have a target on my back but we'll see how it goes."
Team-mate Cassie Patten missed out on qualification for the open water event at the Olympics, though, after she finished in 21st.
