Darren Ferguson admitted he had taken a gamble signing Paul Taylor after he earned Peterborough a 2-2 draw against Millwall.
The striker was handed a six-month FA ban three years ago while playing for Chester for failing a drugs test but is now showing signs of maturity.
Ferguson signed the 23-year-old from Anderlecht at the end of last season and was rewarded with Taylor's first goal for Posh as he completed a sensational comeback from two goals down.
"He's been playing in Belgium, we knew him from Chester, he's had a tarnished past and we've taken a punt on him," said Ferguson.
"I don't mind taking a chance on people and he's been superb since he came into the building. He's got his head down and done well.
"We've had to get him up to our fitness levels, it's his first real pre-season, but he's got unbelievable ability. The boy's got a chance."
It all looked so different for the visitors when Liam Trotter broke goalkeeper Paul Jones' resistance by sidefooting Millwall ahead after 32 minutes.
