Katie Price and Alex Reid married in a Las Vegas ceremony a short time into their whirlwind romance. With their first anniversary looming, the pair are calling in their separate divorce solicitors to arrange the terms of their divorce.
Speculation in the tabloid press was rife at the beginning of their relationship that Katie was only seeing Alex as a ‘rebound fling' and only ever married him to spite former husband, Peter Andre. The couple denied these rumours and continued their married life under the scrutiny of television cameras, filming every moment of their marriage and personal life for their reality TV series.
Other rumours centered on Alex Reid, suggesting that he was with Katie for her fame, and for the promotional opportunities he could gain by being her husband. He denies this but the fact is that he has benefitted from the relationship, and is now easily the most famous cage fighter in the UK. His win on Channel Fours Celebrity Big Brother, his magazine column and promotional television advertisements and interviews, do nothing to quash his critics.
So it follows the trend that now they are in the process of battling over assets, the press is showing a keen interest and the rumour mill is going strong.
Speculation includes the theory that Katie backtracked on the date for announcing the separation, and that it was carefully timed to fall in line with her other commitments and money making opportunities. Also that she had pre-planned the split and made provisions to cut Alex off from her considerable fortune.
Other sources say that Alex broke Katie's rules by taking her son Junior to a gym, and allowing him to be photographed by the media. There are reported ‘sources' as saying that it was Katie's failure to conceive a fourth baby that led to the break up.
Whatever the cause, divorce solicitors now have the unenviable task of raking over the couple's finances and negotiating a settlement. It has been reported that Alex has already turned down an offer of £250,000 to leave the marriage, and is exercising his right to remain in the family home by staying Katie's dressing room and refusing to sign paperwork. He is said to be holding out for £700,000 or £1,000,000, depending on which article you read. His finances have reportedly been cut off and his brother Rupert named as his new source of income.
Apparently the couple did not sign any pre-nuptial agreement, believing that the marriage would last forever, and that is why divorce solicitors are now having such issues. If Reid is refusing to sign, and Price refusing to offer anything close to what he expects, the stalemate could go on for some time.
