Do you ever watch television shows or movies where a group of young, fashionably dressed women are sitting around a club drinking pink martinis? Well, you don’t have to live the life of Carrie in Sex and the City to enjoy a couple of cosmos. Cosmopolitans are an easy, delicious, and popular cocktail. They are great for parties, for a small get together, or just for you. Most people casually refer to them as cosmos. On a hot day, cosmos can be a refreshing beverage akin to lemonade. Cosmos are traditionally made from vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice. Often thought of as a classy cocktail, cosmos are very popular. For such a popular, classy sounding drink, they are relatively easy and inexpensive to make.
Get Your Ingredients
The first thing that you need to do is purchase the necessary ingredients. Head to your local liquor store and pick up your ingredients. You will need to buy vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice. You can use lemon juice if you prefer. I like lemon juice better than lime, so I use fresh lemons in my cosmos. The quality of your cosmos will depend on the type of liquor you buy. The higher the quality of the liquor you buy, the higher the quality of your cosmos. In my experience, inexpensive liquors also make great cosmos. At most local liquor stores, Grey Goose is probably near the top when it comes to vodka. I have found that, although there are different brands of triple sec, they are all close to the same quality. Any cranberry juice will work, however, you might choose sugar free or organic juice. You can use freshly squeezed lemons or limes, or you can use concentrate. I prefer to use fresh fruit because the taste is better.
Mix Your Mixed Drink
Once you have your ingredients, it is time to mix your cocktail. This recipe is for a single cosmopolitan. Take 1 ounce of vodka, ½ ounce of lime/lemon juice, ½ ounce of cranberry juice, ½ ounce of triple sec, and pour them into a shaker with some ice. You will then shake the shaker vigorously for about ten seconds to ensure the ingredients have mixed properly, and that they have been chilled by the ice. If you don’t like them shaken, or if you lack a shaker, it is ok to simply stir them in a tall glass. Once you have adequately mixed the cosmos, filter out the ice, pour into a martini glass, and garnish with a lemon/lime wedge. Now you have a cute, pink martini that girls in a club will pay eight dollars for!
If you are having a girl’s night get together, or party, you might want to mix a bigger batch. For a large batch of eight servings, take 8 ounces of vodka, 4 ounces of lime/lemon juice, 4 ounces of cranberry juice, 4 ounces of triple sec, and pour them into a large pitcher with some ice. With a large batch, you can’t shake them the way you can with a single serving, so you will have to stir the ingredients with a long spoon.
Many people find cranberry juice to be too bitter. If this is the case, add sugar to the large batch a tablespoon at a time, until it is sweetened to taste. For the single serving, add sugar a teaspoon at a time,
This is just the basic recipe for cosmopolitans. There are many variations that can be made to the recipeCitrus flavored vodka can be used, or a juice can be used that is a combination of cranberry and another flavor. Once you start making them, I wouldn’t be surprised if cosmos became your favorite, alcoholic beverage. _________________ mrsamct |
