Statistics show that miscarriages occur in about 15% of recognized pregnancies. Actually it is estimated that about 40% of all pregnancies may terminate in miscarriages, because mostly, miscarriage occur before a woman comes to know that she is pregnant. Loss of pregnancy within first twenty weeks, when the fetus cannot survive outside the womb is recognized as 'miscarriage'. It is essential to know about miscarriage signs and symptoms.

Miscarriage Signs in Early Pregnancy

First Trimester Miscarriage: Loss of pregnancy within the first twelve weeks of gestation is referred to as miscarriage in first trimester. Miscarriage signs in first trimester are:

* Mild or severe back pain
* Sudden weight loss
* Abdominal cramping or painful contractions after every few minutes
* White or pink colored mucus discharge
* Vaginal discharge includes blood clots and some tissues
* Some women may notice bleeding without cramping.
* Prgnancy symptoms like nausea, breast tenderness, food aversions, etc. start disappearing suddenly.

Chromosomal abnormality in the baby, hormonal imbalance, health problems, infections, nutritional deficiency, alcohol abuse, excessive smoking, injuries, increased age (above 35) are the main reasons behind early miscarriages. If any of the above early miscarriage signs are noticed, then the woman needs to consult her doctor immediately.

Second Trimester Miscarriage: Second trimester miscarriage signs and symptoms are:

* Vaginal spotting or bleeding
* Change in the appearance of vaginal discharge, passing of tissue or clotted material
* Back pain
* Severe abdominal pain or cramping
* Not feeling the baby move
* Frequent contractions
* Pelvic pressure

Increased age, uterine fibroids, chromosomal abnormalities, structural problems, auto immune disease, excessive smoking, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, infections, diseases like diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, hormonal imbalance can result in miscarriage in early pregnancy.

Miscarriage: Signs of Infection: After a miscarriage, if heavy bleeding is noticed (passing large clots), which continues for more than two weeks, then the woman is more likely to have an infection. The woman may continue to experience back pain and abdominal pain after the miscarriage. If these signs are neglected, future pregnancies can be problematic and can even prove to be fatal. Symptoms of infection after miscarriage are:

* Chills, shivering
* Fever over 100.4 degrees
* Foul smelling yellowish vaginal discharge
* Uterine pain or prolonged cramping

Missed Miscarriage Signs

Missed miscarriage rarely happens. It is a condition wherein the end of pregnancy is not realized by the pregnant woman. The embryo demises and the mother doesn't even notice any miscarriage symptoms. Mother's body carries the dead embryo. Missed miscarriage signs can be ambiguous. Here are some symptoms of missed miscarriage:

* Reduction of fatigue, the pregnant woman experiences more energy
* Fading away of pregnancy symptoms. (Some women do experience pregnancy symptoms, even after a missed miscarriage)
* Brown colored vaginal discharge which might turn bright red
* Absence of heart beat can be noticed in ultrasound test

The above miscarriage warning signs should be considered as guidelines. Women should not jump to a conclusion after referring to the above mentioned miscarriage signs. They should consult a doctor to know the actual reason behind the symptoms that they have experienced. And after a miscarriage, the woman should take certain steps to decrease the chances of a future miscarriage. Though genetic factors are mostly responsible for early miscarriages, exercising regularly, following a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, taking vitamins, avoiding smoking and drinking, avoiding stressful situations, can definitely reduce the risk of miscarriages. For a successful pregnancy, women need to avoid certain situations where there is increased risk of injury to fetus and they need to change bad eating and sleeping habits too. Pregnant women should always follow the instructions of the doctors religiously.
