After managing just five hits over 16 innings on Sunday night against Tampa Bay, the Boston Red Sox jump-started their offense in a big way on Monday.
Dustin Pedroia doubled in two runs to spark an eight-run eighth inning, and Boston got home runs from Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Josh Reddick in a 15-10 rout of the host Baltimore Orioles.

Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis and Darnell McDonald each had three runs batted in for the Red Sox, who have won 13 of 15.

Showing little signs of fatigue after their 16-inning game against the Rays the night before, the Red Sox banged out 16 hits in rolling to their seventh straight victory over the Orioles. Boston has outscored Baltimore by 61-32 during that span.

It was the first meeting between the teams since the Red Sox recorded a heated four-game sweep at Fenway Park immediately before the All-Star break.

Boston designated hitter David Ortiz and Orioles closer Kevin Gregg began serving three-game suspensions for their part in a bench-clearing incident during that series. Both players were initially suspended for four games before appealing the punishment.

The Red Sox did not miss Ortiz. Boston fell one run short of matching its season high and had six players with at least two hits, including Pedroia, whose 16-game hitting streak is one short of his career high.

After Boston loaded the bases in the eighth, Pedroia hit a tie-breaking two-run double off Mike Gonzalez (1-2) to make it 9-7. Youkilis added a two-run single, Carl Crawford singled in a run and McDonald capped the inning with a three-run double.

It was the first time since Aug. 2, 2009, that the Orioles lost when reaching double figures in runs.

INDIANS SWEEP TWINS Lou Marson hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the seventh inning and Cleveland completed a doubleheader sweep with a 6-3 victory over the host Minnesota Twins. The teams are playing a four-game series.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer to lift the Indians to a 5-2 win in the first game.

WHITE SOX 5, ROYALS 2 Mark Buerhle lasted seven innings in another impressive start, and Chicago capitalized on an error by shortstop Alcides Escobar to win at Kansas City.

NATIONALS 5, ASTROS 2 Ryan Zimmerman drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to give Washington the win at Houston.

CUBS 6, PHILLIES 1 Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Pena homered to back a dominant start by Rodrigo Lopez, and Chicago beat visiting Philadelphia after Roy Halladay left the game because of the heat.

BRAVES 7, ROCKIES 4 Freddie Freeman homered and drove in three runs to lead Atlanta at Colorado.

NOLAN RYAN IMPROVES Tests on Nolan Ryan, the Texas Rangers team president, showed no new heart problems for him. Ryan, the Hall of Fame pitcher, was hospitalized after experiencing discomfort at his home in Georgetown, Tex., on Sunday morning.

Ryan, 64, is expected to be released from a Houston hospital in a day or two.

SIZEMORE ON DISABLED LIST The Cleveland Indians on Monday placed outfielder Grady Sizemore back on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion. It’s his third stint on the D.L. this season, and the sixth of his career.

Sizemore injured his knee Sunday against Baltimore. He is eligible to return on August 2.

When later he competed in the Alps for the first time, he fell behind the peloton. So this week, as the Tour celebrates its 100th anniversary in the Alps, Thomson’s experiences illustrate what those mountains often mean to cyclists: part poetry, part pain.

“I’m sure those incredible images that captivated me have had the same effect on millions of cyclists throughout the past 100 years,” Thomson wrote in an e-mail.

To commemorate the anniversary, officials scheduled this week of the Tour de France in the Alps, and filled it with four mountaintop finishes, including the highest finish, in elevation, in Tour history. The entire race features 23 “level two,” “level one” or “highest level” mountain passes or summits. The cyclists will encounter 10 of those in the Alps; a fitting — and steep — tribute.
