With the enormous success of James Cameron's 3D flick, Avatar, emphasis on 3D has increased tremendously. And now not only movies are going to be made in 3D, but there are going to be entire channels that will broadcast 3D content. Bringing a change in the way users watch TV, 3D is all set to take television to a whole new level. With ESPN declaring that they will be broadcasting 3D content in the current year [read US: 3D TV Launched], the time where all TV channels will be broadcasting 3D content is not too far way.
However, in what can only be called a technological marvel, Toshiba, the maker of consumer electronics, has launched a TV that is capable of displaying 3D content from a 2D signal. Or at least that is what the company claims that their latest televisions will be capable of doing. Announced at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, Toshiba's 55 inch and 65 inch models will be capable of this amazing feat, including a host of other features.
Toshiba's Vice President of marketing, Scott Ramirez, said "It's unlike anything that's out there. This is the new 'it' TV. It's the one everyone is going to be talking about." And indeed, if it can live up to its claim, this will be the future of television. Besides being an LED TV, the Cell TV, as it is known as, will also feature a high end multimedia chip to render the 3D content, which will make it almost 150 times more powerful than current TVs on the market. The TV will also have a feature that will enable users to transfer media from a PC to the TV, making it easier to view multimedia content on the huge 55 or 65 inch screen. The Cell TV will also be Internet capable and will allow live streaming of content from Pandora and Netflix. And last but not the least, the TV will also function as a video phone, but with way higher resolution that conventional webcams.
With all these features, it wouldn't be surprising if this TV from Toshiba turns out to be a huge success. With channels already planning to broadcast 3D content (ESPN confirmed and DirecTV to declare their 3D channel at the CES), this might be the perfect TV to buy in the coming year. However, with 3D TV becoming a reality, there will be lots of other manufacturers to enter the market, and the Toshiba TV will have to do exceptionally well to emerge as a leader here.
The billion dollar turnover of Avatar has shown that the world is ready for 3D, and that there will be many takers for this new technology. After the HDTV craze, this is going to be the next big thing for videophiles to drool over. And at 65 inches of 3D, Toshiba has almost delivered the theater to your home. _________________ mrsamct |
