Director Todd Phillips has come under fire by animal rights groups for getting the monkey that stars in Hangover 2 addicted to cigarettes.

Todd Phillips has admitted that the monkey, which features in the forthcoming comedy, has become addicted to cigarettes following filming.

Statement from Todd Phillips:

This was a joke. I make comedies.

If you read the story, it doesn't even make sense. "On the set of her new film, she won't stop smoking cigarettes". Umm. Really? Maybe just take them away from her. Or at least take her money away so she can't buy them any longer.

When you are doing press for a film, it tends to get repetitive, lots of the same questions over and over. Sometimes I like to mix it up with the journalists. Obviously, the monkey in the film NEVER smoked a single cigarette. There are people on set whose sole job is to protect that monkey. Even if I wanted her to smoke it wouldn't be allowed. By the way, she also appears to do cocaine in the movie, but I guarantee you that she didn't do that either (I can't, however, comment on Ken Jeong's cocaine use in the film).
Sorry for the confusion, but it definitely is a funny headline "PETA pissed after Todd Phillips gets Hangover 2 monkey addicted to cigarettes." Definitely one for the office wall.

The monkey plays a significant role in the movie. A trailer featuring the primate simulating a sex act was pulled from theaters by the Motion Pictures Association of America earlier this month. (It was re-edited before making a second debut ahead of Scream 4 Friday.)

This isn't the first time The Hangover's monkey has come under the spotlight.

The initial trailer for the film, which showed controversial scenes featuring the animal, was pulled by the Motion Picture Association of America after it attracted a host of complaints.

However the monkey has continued to feature heavily in promotional material and trailers for the film, which again stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms.

The movie takes place two years after the first film which was set in Las Vegas, and features the boys throwing a bachelor party for Stu.

Once again, things don't go to plan and the trio wake up in a Bangkok hotel room with Ed's character Stu waking up with a tattoo on his face and Stu's brother-in-law Teddy missing.

During the mission to find Teddy, the trio visit a monastery where Alan gets knocked out by a monk, a girly bar where gun fire breaks out and yet another car chase where the boys trash a sports car.
