Blanks briefly lost his advantage late in the day when Sean O'Hair moved onto four-under but he bogeyed his final three holes to fall back into the pack of players.
Veteran Ernie Els was among the large group a shot off the pace after posting three birdies and a single bogey.
The veteran South African was joined by the likes of Kevin Kisner, Bo Van Pelt and local hopeful Matt McQuillan in shooting a two-under 68.
Ricky Fowler was among a group of nine players a further stroke back while world No.1 Luke Donald recovered from a disastrous beginning to finish on level-par.
The Englishman endured a rollercoaster round after be returned double bogeys on two of his opening four holes, but recovered impressively with five birdies.
A bogey at his penultimate hole, though, meant Donald signed for a 70.
