GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (Dzeko, 45 mins)

Greg from Cardiff: "Delighted with the win! Introduction of Gestede brought whole new complexion to City attack. That's the way to go for Malky, Miller & Earnshaw are too similar."

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan at Wembley: After the most lethargic of starts, Manchester City's season erupts into life. They have been second best for most of this first half, but lead thanks to the simplest of goals. The United fans in front of me are sitting in stunned silence. To my right, a blue mass is still celebrating.

Lescott goal: From wide on the right, David Silva slinks a teasing left-footed free-kick into that Bermuda Triangle between the defence and the opposition goalkeeper just in front of the six-yard box. David De Gea gets lost as Joleon Lescott powers skywards to nod past the young Spanish debutant with proverbial cigar in mouth.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (Lescott, 38 mins)

1510: Yaya Toure yet another to get his name written down by Phil Dowd. Yellow card for the big midfielder. Then Nani duly skids a low free-kick past Joe Hart... but just past the post.

1504: Luscious slide-rule pass from David Silva but James Milner legs lack composure as he stutters towards the ball before limping a shot wide. Wasteful. Ashley Young looking jet-heeled...

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan at Wembley: "Not much of a statement of intent by Manchester City so far. United have simply been sharper and slicker than Roberto Mancini's men, and only their final ball has let them down. The chances keep on coming for United though."

Full time
FULL-TIME AT UPTON PARK - WEST HAM 0-1 CARDIFF

1456: Flurry of yellow amid the red and blue at Wembley. Micah Richards is booked after crashing low into Ashley Young, but it could have been red. Bad challenge. Anderson and Dzeko were also booked seconds earlier. Referee busy in north-west London.

Miller goal: Hideous gift from the Hammers. Gestede jinks down the right, Ilunga a mere ghost, to pull the ball back for Kenny Miller. The former Rangers man, on his full debut, takes his time to consult the textbook before swilvelling to fire high past Rob Green - who flapped at it somewhat. Enormous roar from travelling Bluebirds as Irons fans bellow in disgust. Defeat for Sam Allardyce on day one...

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
GOAL! WEST HAM 0-1 CARDIFF CITY (Miller)

1451: Nearly 30,000 West Ham fans wince in unison as Cardiff keeper Marshall clamps his claws around Barrera's header. Could've done better. Tidy flick-on from Carlton Cole. Nice movement.

1448: Like an exotic Mancunian Serengeti down on the Wembley turf as Vidic and Balotelli go forehead-to-forehead. That's just starters you'd imagine. Quiet start apart from that.

1444: Pablo Barrera skips on for Freddie Sears at Upton Park. Carlton Cole tries to spin in the box but he's offside. "You could get a Rizla between them, I suppose," chides Lawro on BBC1.

Anonymous texts on 81111: "A midfield of Carrick and Anderson? That won't even get close to helping beat Barcelona never mind Man City. Schweinsteiger would be a stellar signing."

1435: Remember that breakaway goal against Arsenal a couple of seasons back? Nani and Wayne Rooney attempt some snappy link-up play of that fashion but it peters out to nowt. Restful vibe at Upton Park. Craving some emotional outlet it would seem. Still goalless.

Whistle
1433: Take That move over. Manchester United and Manchester City have just kicked off the Community Shield...

1431: "Very good chance," as Lawro notes, for the man who's just come on but his header, from a fine leap, skims off eyebrows away to safety as the West Ham faithful breathe easily again.

1430: Robert Earnshaw off for Cardiff, replaced by striker Rudy Gestede. His first dip into the bracing waters of English football.

1428: Ah! Wembley. Red. Sky blue. Something of a habit this...

Twitter
Mykey Winstanley on Twitter: "Neither Fergie or Mancini can say today doesn't matter. Always a great way to start the season by winning a trophy."

Someone has struck the woodwork
1425: Matt Taylor evokes the spirit of Stanley Matthews with some superb wing play. But Piquionne crashes his cross against the post. Closest call yet. Parker probing.

1419: Nice chipped cross from Mark Noble but Piquionne cannot guide his header beyond Marshall as, rugby style, substitute Carlton Cole works up a sweat on an exercise bike in the tunnel. Taylor makes Marshall save. Ebb, flow.

1417: Onus slowly falling on the Hammers as the clock ticks away. Hudson wins a foul after a wrestling match with Piquonne. Little width for the hosts. Rowdy shouts tumble from the stands. Microphones picking up some blue language. This is a football match. Cardiff fans taunt Rob Green with chants of "USA, USA, USA, USA..." Nothing too eye-catching on the pitch right now. Much graft, little craft.

1412: Caledonian interlude for you... Celtic have just won 1-0 at Aberdeen. But the Glasgow club fear that Emilio Izaguirre has broken his ankle after being stretchered off. Back to Upton Park...

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan at Wembley for the Community Shield with full team news: "Man United start with two of their three summer signings in goalkeeper David De Gea and winger Ashley Young, with the latter joining Michael Carrick, Anderson and Nani in midfield. Phil Jones is among the United substitutes, while Danny Welbeck gets the nod ahead of Dimitar Berbatov to partner Wayne Rooney up front. Like Berbatov, Man City's £38m record signing Sergio Aguero begins on the bench, alongside fellow new-boys Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic, and Carlos Tevez's absence on extended leave means City have a front pairing of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko."

Whistle
1407: The squalling rain has started once again, and so has the match. West Ham get the second half under way, attacking the Bobby Moore stand. Pitch greasy now.

Anonymous texts in on 81111: "Promising start from new-look Cardiff City. Good passage of play for us in last 10 minutes of the half. Hammers' midfield looks class though."

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan at Wembley for the Community Shield: "The blue and red halves of Manchester decamp to meet at Wembley for the second time this year, and there is rather more than just pride at stake. Sir Alex Ferguson may claim the Community Shield is nothing more than a "stepping stone" to the new season but you can be sure that Premier League champions United and FA Cup holders City will be looking to lay down a marker for a campaign that could well see them going head-to-head for the title. Familiar faces such as Paul Scholes and Carlos Tevez may be absent but a sunny Wembley should provide the perfect setting, as we wait for our first sighting of the likes of Ashley Young, David De Gea and Sergio Aguero in (semi) competitive action for their new clubs."

1352: "It looked like a nervous start for West Ham especially," says Dave Jones on BBC1. "But they've had the best of the couple of half-chances." Lee Dixon adds: "Both teams looked a bit tired to me, lacking in energy." What are your thoughts good football folk?

Half time
HALF-TIME: WEST HAM UNITED 0-0 CARDIFF CITY

1347: Sneaky Whittingham tries to sneak a low free-kick inside Green's post but the West Ham man saves with comfortle grace. Cardiff stringing some impressive possession together now.

BREAKING TEAM NEWS SNAP FOR COMMUNITY SHIELD
David De Gea and Ashley Young both start for Manchester United. Carrick too. Danny Welbeck also partners Wayne Rooney in attack.

It's raining
1340: As the sun escapes for a snooze and the heavens splutter into life, Piquonnne scuffs a weak shot from outside the box into the arms of Marshall. Bit of a lull before the break, which is about six minutes away now. Surely they'll be a goal now, given how I'm pitching it...

BREAKING TEAM NEWS SNAP FOR COMMUNITY SHIELD
Roberto Mancini starts Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko start in attack for Manchester City. No start for Sergio Aguero then.

1334: Irons striker Sears sets up former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan, but his shot is deflected away. "Nolan is a massive signing for West Ham, so important for them," says Mark Lawrenson on BBC1.

1331: Scorn spills from the stands as Kenny Miller tangles with the hosts. Howard Webb trots over to sort it out. Fairly fast-paced.

Dukes' regular 'Little Nick' from Chelmsford texts: "West Ham to get solid win in Big Sam's first game! And, yes, you can definitely hold me to that..."

1325: Yet again a long throw from Cardiff's Gunnarsson goes straight out of play. What a waste. But Hammers keeper Rob Green is alive to a deflected header from Don Cowie, the Cardiff man injecting power into his low attempt. Nothing comes of the corner. Any players catching your eye in particular?
