ESPN is launching a 3D network for United States TV viewers. The giant cable network has announced that it will launch the new channel called 'ESPN 3D' on June 11, 2010. It will begin with the 3D broadcast of the FIFA World Cup soccer match between Mexico and South Africa. As a trial, in September, a football game between University of Southern California and Ohio State was shot and broadcast in 3D in many theaters in the US, and also on USC's campus. ESPN has been testing this technology for well over 2 years now, and they want it to start perfectly, hence its launch was not rushed into.
Over the year, ESPN will be showing nearly a 100 live games covering international soccer matches, college football, college basketball, Summer X Games, to name a few. George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports, said, "ESPN's commitment to 3D is a win for fans and our business partners. ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing"
At the start, the channel will be blank in between the live events. A 3D television set and 3D glasses are required to enjoy this kind of viewing. 3D TV is one step ahead of High Definition Television (HDTV). Even DirecTV is expected to reveal their plans regarding their 3D channel at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. So with 2 players in this segment, the competition will only benefit the viewers. We just have to wait and see how long this 3D technology and kind of viewing will take to pick up among the TV viewers. _________________ mrsamct |
